City West Complex Zurich - Area

Project Study 2003 – 2009

Subsequent to the approval of the original project, the entire plan collapsed because of above-average construction costs and the difficult conditions of the flats added on the lowest floors. A residential high-rise, whose marketing was quite promising for a successful start due to the upscale price level, and the vertical repetition of the flats in the flat buildings, allowed an architectural restart. We kept the broken-up courtyards however, which provided the flats with a slightly diagonal position and outwards orientation, especially towards the town park on the western track yard.

The three seven-storey residential buildings define a single generative theme per building that has certain affinities in all blocks. The plan is based on support elements: supports and parts of the slabs directly turn into the transforming agent in the spatial layout of the flat. In the case of Block A, in direct proximity to the tracks, the slab parts form the actual parallax: depending on the viewer’s perspective, the facings continually transform the fantastic view of the track yard. These turns enhance diagonal views as well as a segmentation, and moreover allow a small circuit of movement.
