Hotel Dolder Waldhaus Zurich

The horizontal lines of the silhouette of the new Dolder Waldhaus confidently add themselves as a large format into a residential area full of villas and yet nestle as part of a string of pearls consisting of large houses along Adlisberg into the landscape. They are perceived from the town as an ensemble, together with the Dolder Grand.

The large, sinuous curvature of the building is not placed parallel to the slope; it pushes itself into the visual axes towards the town, the lake, and the mountains and, as it unfolds, simultaneously follows the geometric rules of contraction and expansion. This creation of tension and suspense allows neither symmetry, nor a preferred plane of projection; rather, it is a process that drives itself to infinity with the topographic lines of the silhouettes. Within the development created along with the Dolderbahn, the curved volume with its varying concave and convex curvatures demonstrates an urbanistic concept of landscape, within which the architecture created a multi-layered model of topography, large architectural shapes and an open and urban development of villas. The proximity, that is, the minimum distances to the lake and the city also belong to this small and yet also large town, the same as the inspiring landscape, in which the park in the foreground overlaps the panorama lines of the mountain peaks in the background. At the Dolder Waldhaus, the orientation of the building and the dovetailing with the fantastic view created by the topographical location depend on each other in a virtually emblematic and Elysian manner.
